Field and context

Upper Zakum occupies a broad east–west-trending anticline in the Arabian Gulf sector of the Arabian Basin. Its reservoirs are Lower Cretaceous shallow-marine carbonates of the Thamama Group, particularly the Kharaib and Shuaiba formations, subdivided into multiple flow units. It is one of the world’s largest offshore oil accumulations and is developed using waterflooding and long extended-reach, maximum-reservoir-contact wells.
